Distribution of the GNU/Linux Operating System
LINUX is a free Operating System (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. All Linux Distribution uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux
This document contains installation instructions for the Linux system, for the Intel x86 ("i386") architecture. It also contains pointers to more information and information on how to make the most of your new Linux Distribution system.
Although this installation guide for i386 is mostly up-to-date, we plan to make some changes and reorganize parts of the manual after the official release of lenny. A newer version of this manual may be found on the Internet at this home page. You may also be able to find additional translations there
